Boost Your Energy

Do you feel dog tired? Your Adrenal Glands may need support!

Your adrenal glands release hormones which regulate energy levels, stamina, blood pressure and the immune system.

When the adrenal glands are not functioning optimally, you can have a condition that is known as adrenal fatigue.  Adrenal fatigue often develops after periods of physical or emotional stress, when overstimulation of the glands leaves them unable to meet your body's energy needs.

Feel tired, unmotivated, foggy-headed or like you've "hit the wall"?

Dog TiredMany people with adrenal fatigue have gone to their GP and their blood test results are normal and don’t reflect their fatigue. This is where seeing a Naturopath for investigations into adrenal fatigue may be useful. Treatment with herbal medicine and nutrition can boost adrenal function to help you feel energised again.

SYMPTOMS OF ADRENAL FATIGUE may include:

  • excessive fatigue and exhaustion
  • non-refreshing sleep (you get enough hours of sleep, but wake tired)
  • overwhelmed by life or unable to cope with stressors
  • feeling rundown
  • craving salty and sweet foods
  • you feel most energetic in the evening
  • having disturbed sleep/ insomnia/ waking during the night
  • low stamina, slow to recover from exercise
  • slow to recover from injury, illness or stress
  • difficulty concentrating, brain fog
  • poor digestion
  • low immune function
  • food or environmental allergies
  • premenstrual syndrome or difficulties that develop during menopause
  • consistent low blood pressure
  • extreme sensitivity to cold or excessive sweating

Boost Your Energy

The adrenal hormones Adrenaline and Cortisol help  to balance your blood sugar and daily energy needs.

When blood sugar drops, the adrenals release hormones that cause the blood sugar to rise, and increase energy levels.

The adrenals also release hormones when we're under stress. This process is called the "fight or flight" response from the days when we needed to run away from threatened attack by wild animals. This stress response now kicks in for everyday stressors, such as traffic jams, arguments, and work pressures.

Modern life and being under long term stress takes a toll on the adrenal glands, and eventually, they may run out of steam, and stop producing sufficient hormones to meet your daily needs for energy and coping with stress.

Boost Energy with Adaptogenic Herbs

The bad news…consuming excessive stimulants like coffee/ sugar when your adrenals are depleted is like "like kicking a dead horse."  The good news….. there are many herbal and nutritional medicines that gently increase your energy levels, reduce your stress and help your adrenals recover without draining your body.

“Adaptogenic” herbs help you adapt to stress, helping your body to have more stamina, endurance and be less affected by stressful situations. Our Naturopath, Elysia will prescribe the right herbs for your individual needs to boost your energy.

TIPS TO HELP BOOST ADRENAL FUNCTION

Avoid Stimulants

As much as you may want them, stimulants are the adrenal equivalent of giving too much gas and "flooding the engine" in a car.  Cut down on Coffee, Red Bull, Coke and beverages high in caffeine and sugar.

Balance Your Blood Sugar With Your Diet

To minimise stress on the adrenal system, and ensure maximum energy, you should consider a low-glycemic (low-sugar) diet, consisting of sufficient protein, fat and low-glycemic carbohydrates, eaten in smaller, more frequent meals throughout the day. Sugar and simple carbohydrates put stress on the adrenal glands by rapidly shifting blood sugar levels.  Your Naturopath will guide you through the right diet for your body and individual needs.

ADRENAL FATIGUE MAY ALSO BE RELATED TO:

  • Low thyroid function/menopause/infertility

It’s very important for women of menopausal age or wanting to have a baby to check their adrenal and thyroid function. Low functioning adrenal glands in conjunction with poor thyroid function may contribute to trouble losing weight,  low energy, poor concentration, menopausal symptoms and infertility.

  • Fatigue from increased exercise

Good adrenal function improves your body’s stamina and ability to recover from exercise. If after exercising you are finding that you’re overly fatigued/ tired at work and needing a boost you may need to check your adrenal function.

  • Insomnia, Mild Depression and Anxiety also may be related to adrenal fatigue.
