Reflexology and Anxiety

Feeling down, anxious, depressed?  Lacking confidence in yourself and drive to get through your days?

Have you had a reflexology treatment before?

Reflexology is the application of acupressure or manipulation of the feet, hands or face to increase health benefits.

Certain parts of your foot are believed to correspond to the parts of the body. You may have seen a “Reflexology chart” showing this somewhere like a massage clinic. Applying pressure to a particular part of the foot will send a signal to the corresponding body part and is believed to improve the health of that body part.  Some people refer to it simply as a “foot massage” but reflexology is believed to provide more health benefits than an ordinary foot massage.

Does reflexology help with anxiety?

Many of my clients have stated that it has definitely assisted them to feel more relaxed following the treatment. They tell me that they feel a lot calmer than before the treatment and the benefits can be far deeper than just a feeling of wellbeing.

According to Wynn (2006), the benefits of reflexology are:

  • Reduced stress and tension
  • Improved circulation
  • Alleviation of pain
  • Balancing of the nervous system
  • Boosting lymphatic function
  • Stimulation of a sluggish and congested system
  • Improvement of sleeping patterns
  • Increased energy and vitality
  • Detoxification and cleansing of the body
  • Improved skin tone and condition
  • Promotion of self-healing

Reflexology helps retain the flow of the body’s natural energy when reflexology points on the foot are pressed or massaged. It assists with maintenance of mental and physical health. The Reflexology Association on Australia also explains that the focus of the treatment is on relaxation and balancing of the body systems.

Mainly, I do a foot reflexology because it is thought to provide better outcomes than hand or face reflexology, although sometimes I do combine foot and face reflexology. It takes about 15 to 30 minutes, depending on your conditions or requests.  It should be noted that reflexology is not recommended for during pregnancy.
