Don't be fooled by advertising: the low carb beer example
Many companies like to advertise their products with health claims such as "low fat" or "low carb." Many of us choose these products, believing them to be the healthier choice. But we need to be aware of these misleading food marketing tricks, as they are often used to disguise hidden diet no no's. For example a packet of lollies labelled "low fat" doesn't mention that they are 70% sugar!
Recently a lot of low carb beers have appeared on the market. The alcohol companies have released beers which are indeed lower in carb than standard full strength beers. So we all drink them feeling good about ourselves and how we are saving our waistlines. However, the calories from a beer are mainly from the alcohol content in the beer NOT the carbs! So if you're drinking a full strength low carb beer it still has a lot more calories then a light beer. It's the calories from the alcohol which makes us gain weight, not really the carbs. So infact, you're better off drinking light or reduced alcohol drinks or a nip of spirits with a diet / non sugary mixer.
