Hormone Testing

Why test saliva and not just do blood tests?

Testing saliva gives you an accurate picture of the active hormones available for use by your body. Blood testing tests the active and the bound (inactive) hormones. Saliva testing can give you more detailed, further insight into how your body’s hormones are working than conventional blood tests. All tests are sent to an accredited laboratory, Nutritional Laboratory Services www.nlabs.com.au and a comprehensive hormone report is given.

About Cortisol (The Stress Hormone)

When the body has been under longterm stress it can enter into a 'chronic stress response' and high levels of the stress hormone cortisol are produced. To produce this extra cortisol, the body 'steals' from our other important sex hormones like Progesterone, Oestrogen and Testosterone. This can leave you with hormonal imbalances which can be identified and treated by your Naturopath.

Imbalance in cortisol levels can result in symptoms such as:

Anxiety, busy mind you can't switch off, overeating, high blood pressure, allergies, weight gain, poor metabolism, low sex drive, diabetes, heart disease, more colds/flus than normal, infertility, hormonal imbalances and depression.

Some people will not realize or feel that they are stressed and just soldier on. Some of the biggest stressors in our lives include relationship problems, death of a loved one, workplace tension, moving house and financial problems. It’s important to recognize the effect stress can have on our lives and do something proactive about it to enhance our health and wellbeing.

Testing cortisol levels gives us an excellent idea of how the body is coping with the stresses of everyday life and if other hormones are being affected by the "hormone steal" pathway. The World Health Organization verifies saliva as an accurate and non-invasive way to test cortisol levels.

Case Study

A recent male client had been working with a Personal Trainer and increased muscle tone but found it very hard to shift the extra weight around his stomach and chest.

We tested his saliva and found that he was much higher in Oestrogen than a man should be. This can be quite common as testosterone can convert to oestrogen if nutrient deficiencies and stress exist.

So we found the cause of his problem and starting clearing the excess oestrogens by supporting his liver function with herbal medicine and a nutritional plan.

His future measurements were positive, indicating much lower body fat around his abdomen and chest.

How much will saliva hormone testing cost?

Basic tests range from $70 up to $180 depending on the number of hormones tested. This is a once off fee from the laboratory. Your Naturopath will evaluate what hormones you need tested.

Functional Liver Detox Profile

The Functional Liver Detoxification Profile (FLDP) challenges the liver’s Phase I and Phase II detoxification capacity with low doses of Caffeine, Aspirin and Paracetamol. Saliva and urine specimens, collected at timed intervals, are then analysed for metabolites of the three compounds to determine the efficiency of the liver in their conversion and clearance from the body.

The test may provide valuable information in the management of patients who suffer from food allergies, multiple chemical sensitivities, chronic fatigue syndrome, "leaky gut" and hormonal imbalance eg. premenstrual syndrome and menopausal symptoms.

Hair Mineral Analysis

Hair mineral analysis is a safe, non-invasive test that measures the levels and comparative ratios of nutrients and toxic metals found in hair. Hair mineral analysis can detect whether there is an excess or deficiency of vital nutrient minerals such as calcium, potassium, zinc and iron. It can also identify over-exposure to toxic metals such as aluminium, lead, arsenic and mercury.
