ECZEMA (also called ATOPIC DERMATITIS)

Natural help for eczema

Are you looking for a natural way to reduce your eczema? Sick of itchy, dry, flaky skin?

Eczema can affect infants and adults, presenting on the face, neck, buttocks and elbow, wrist, ankle and knee joints.

Possible causes of Eczema include:

  • Food intolerances
  • Biochemical
  • Immune abnormalities
  • Stress
  • Poor detoxification & elimination - skin is the the body’s biggest elimination organ
  • Idiopathic (unknown)
  • Familial (atopic)

What’s your trigger?

  • Sweating
  • Stress
  • Dust
  • Food intolerances
  • Seasonality

Topical steroids are often prescribed which is great for a short term solution, but as Naturopaths we like to address the underlying cause.

We also like to educate clients about the long term side effects of consistent topical steroid use, these include thinning of skin, easy bruising and tearing of the skin and increased susceptibility to skin infections.

This does vary on the strength and specific steroid, location and length of application with long-term, it can cause suppression of your natural production of steroids (which are essential for living.)

Things you can do to reduce your eczema

Reduce exposure to environmental irritants

  • Dust mites can be reduced by washing sheets in 60°C and over, allergen proof cover for mattresses, vacuum regularly (wood floors preferable over carpet.)
  • Limiting exposure to microwaves and more than 1 hour mobile phone use, as they can increase allergic response
  • Avoid wearing rough or synthetic clothing that result in sweating
  • Choose mild soaps with less fragrance (look at the ingredient list – if you wouldn’t want to eat the ingredients – you shouldn’t put it on your body!)

What to expect from your Naturopathy consultation

The best way to understand the cause of dysfunction in the body is to take a comprehensive health history. Your Naturopath will spend an hour with you at your first consultation asking questions about all the systems in your body – this gives us the framework to understand which areas of your body are working well and which areas need help.

Your Naturopath will give you an evaluation of your health, a plan for your treatment and then ask you in which order of priority you would like to treat your health issues. You will receive a hands on treatment and be given proactive recommendations to take home to improve your health.

Things you can do to reduce your Eczema

Eliminate food and preservative intolerances

Increase nutrient dense and reduce highly refined foods (ie anything in a packet!)

  • Important nutrients to improve digestion and elimination include zinc, omega-3 fatty acids, vitamin D, vitamin A and probiotics. Consult one of our Naturopaths for testing and to see which nutrients and or herbs are appropriate for your individual situation.

Reduce stress

  • Stress includes physical and emotional stressors
  • Mindfulness practice

Support elimination channels

  • Especially the digestive tract – our Naturopaths assess your digestion, absorption and stool regularity and consistency. We also assess your gut’s bacterial balance to help balance immune system, an imbalance in gut bugs has been shown to trigger eczema.

Specific herbs and topical preparations can be made in the clinic to further reduce your eczema specific symptoms.

Pre- and post-conception care - you can influence your next generation!

Studies have shown when you have a family history of eczema (or atopic diseases, including asthma and hayfever) by improving your gut health with certain strains of probiotics can reduce the chance of your newborn presenting with eczema. Caesarean delivered babies benefited from their mothers taking probiotics pre and post-natally.
