Baby Osteopath Brisbane

Babies are an amazing gift and bring so much joy to a family. However, a baby that is unhappy, over-tired or distressed can affect the whole household. There are a vast array of issues that a baby and it's parents can experience in the first 12-24 months following birth. Although crying is normal during the newborn period, if you feel that your baby may be experiencing something beyond the usual "newborn fussiness",   Osteopathy is a gentle option to address musculoskeletal tension or discomfort that may be causing distress in infants and young children.

Our Osteopath, Dr Emma Kopcikas, enjoys assisting Brisbane babies and children, and has many years experience with gentle, age-appropriate Osteopathic techniques.

Common reasons why parents bring their babies and children to see our Brisbane Osteopaths

It is important to note that Osteopathic techniques only work directly on musculoskeletal conditions. For example, when we see babies for Colic and Reflux, the goal of treatment is to relieve tension and discomfort in the body that might be contributing to these conditions (rather than fix an immature stomach sphincter). By reducing tension in the body, Osteopathic treatment also seeks to have a positive and calming effect on the nervous system that may also help to resolve excessive crying or inability to settle.

This is the same approach taken when babies present with trouble settling down to sleep, latch / feeding difficulties, digestive issues, and restricted range of movement. Our Osteopaths will perform a thorough assessment in order to identify any musculoskeletal tension or dysfunction that could be contributing to these symptoms, and will discuss appropriate treatment techniques and how they might help.

Musculoskeletal tension causing restricted movement or favoured positions in babies is a common cause of Plagiocephaly (flat spots or mishapen head) and you can read more about those conditions here.

If you are still unsure if Osteopathy is the right choice for your child or baby, we would be happy to arrange a free 5 minute chat with our Osteopath on 3162 2211 so you can discuss your concerns directly with a practitioner. This is a good option for new mothers who have concerns for their babies, or themselves, following a difficult birth such as an emergency caesarian, long labour, use of forceps, vacuum extraction, or difficult birth position, and are unsure if treatment is appropriate or necessary.

What to expect during your baby's osteopathic session

Initial Osteopathic consultations for babies are for up to one hour, where we really get to know you and your child. We take a comprehensive health history before doing any hands on work to ensure that we assess your baby and his / her unique situation in a holistic manner.

Dr Emma then uses a series of gentle, age-appropriate techniques to address any areas of imbalance in the musculoskeletal system, and help to calm the nervous system. This may have a flow on effect to asisst imbalances in other organs and systems of the body.

Follow up consultations are for half an hour. Emma enjoys working as an Osteopath treating babies and children and has joined the team at Vibe Natural Health in Brisbane so she can work alongside a team of family focused team of Naturopaths, Nutritionists, Chiropractors, Acupuncurists and Massage therapists, dedicated to looking after the health of you and your children.
